Gordian III, the barbarians and the gratitude of the saved

Publication of a new Greek inscription in the Archaeologia Bulgarica 2018/3 journal, sheds light on the role of Legio Prima Italica in the saving Dionisiopolis (nowadays the city of Balchik) from a powerful barbaric assault in the 3rd century. The thanksgiving inscription is from a pedestal below the statue of Emperor Gordian III, found reused in a building, west of the legion thermae in the military camp Novae near nowadays Svishtov.
