Nicopolis ad Nestum

The metamorphosis of ancient villa in Episcopal palace studies the team of Assoc. Prof. Dr. Margarita Vaklinova and Assistant Tsvetana Komitova in Nicopolis ad Nestum. This year’s excavations near the village of Garmen (SW BG) financed by the Ministry of culture, provide interesting information about the reconstructions of the city villa (villa urbana), built in the 2nd century – including about its paving with a beautiful mosaic, which will be restored and conserved.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Vaklinova the building belonged originally to a noble citizen – perhaps, the governor of the city, and then became the residence of a bishop; the villa’s bathroom was turned into a baptistery with marble trays, decorated with crosses. There is even a preserved inscription, shown and read in front of the camera of Archaeologia Bulgarica
